Dystopian Novels Introduction
In the present age, it may not be easy for us to understand ourselves and society, which is utterly complex and full of diversity. Time and time again, we cannot distinguish between that which is truth and that which is deception, between good and evil... The line between oppositions is often blurred. However, in the depths of their being, people tend to strive for that which is good, even though each of their attempts might bring them into confrontation with various evils which stand in opposition, both avoidable and unavoidable. Still, isn’t it also true that ideals (always so beautiful) are often reduced to ashes at the end of the road?
‘Literature of Imaginary Worlds’ is a series of translated works which portray an image of ideal utopias and their opposites. It is a collection of selected writings from significant thinkers and authors who present different views regarding the organization and control of society, including the roles of and relations—both preferable and unpreferable—between human beings.
One of the most important questions of “Literature of Imaginary Worlds” is how we, as human beings, can ultimately coexist happily. Which rules and regulations must be accepted as an agreement between the ruler and the ruled? Even further, should the ‘existence’ of the state be fixed or changed in any way? How unlimited or limited is the extent of an individual’s ‘liberty’?
In any case, ‘Literature of Imaginary Worlds’ is not a collection of ‘pre-processed’ works which provide the reader with final or definite answers to the question of what an ideal society should be. However, ‘Literature of Imaginary Worlds’ is only a body of literary ‘texts’ which attempts to explain and portray all the various good and bad qualities pervasive in society.
As for the definitive answer, we—Sommadhi Publishing—leave it to the freedom of our readers to think and figure it out for themselves. And if these works of literature still possess their power and charms, we sincerely hope to see them help in pushing this struggle to come up with an answer to carry on to its destination.
Furthermore, we believe that most books don’t demand anything from their readers; it is the readers who demand something from those books. However, for some books, they demand that their readers consider a duty or some kind of significant goal in their life. We believe that ‘Literature of Imaginary Worlds’ belongs in the latter category.
Lastly, if somehow the persistent passion for that which is good and idealistic dreams have not completely disappeared from our conscience, we—both the readers and Sommadhi Publishing—have to make that need for change exist not only in the realm of letters but also in actual reality.
